AVA Part-Time

Atlanta Virtual Academy offers a variety of options that can be taken during the day. APS students who take AVA online courses are able to maximize their time during the semester to complete their required curriculum. Students receive support from certified teachers via the Live Virtual Learning Center during and beyond the day. High school students can recover course credit or meet initial credit requirements through AVA. Middle school students can take advanced middle school courses and high school courses online.

Credit Recovery Courses

Provides an opportunity for students to retake a high school course in which he/she previously was not academically successful in earning credit towards graduation. The AVA Credit Recovery program allows students to gain mastery in standards in which they are deficient. Students are provided with a pre-assessment and then provided instruction based on standards that have not been mastered. AVA Credit Recovery students will be assigned a content teacher, and if working during the school day, students will have access to a virtual classroom with a content teacher for questions. Once students complete the virtual instructional lesson, they take a post-test in which they must achieve 70% mastery to move forward to the next lesson without being prompted to use additional attempts. Upon earning a passing grade, students are awarded credit for the course. Note: For this option, student's previous final grade of 69% or below must be posted to their transcript before registering.

Note: **Per NCAA guidelines, student athletes CANNOT participate in the Credit Recovery program.

Full Time Enrollment

AVA Initial Credit is for students who are taking middle and high school courses for the first time or student-athletes who need to retake a course (AVA Initial Credit courses are NCAA approved). AVA courses are full semester-long courses and are available to ALL Atlanta Public School middle and high school students. AVA initial credit courses are a part of a student’s regular schedule in his or her local school.

AVA Initial Credit is also an option for students interested in getting ahead. The AVA Initial Credit program provides a similar experience to students face-to-face classroom experience since students have an assigned content teacher for their course. Students also have access to a virtual classroom that includes video capabilities, a whiteboard, computer sharing and chat capabilities. Depending on their assigned course, students taking Initial Credit courses can access their teacher for questions during the school day or after school hours.

Lesson/Unit Recovery

AVA Unit Recovery (AVA UR) provides students an opportunity to master the content and recover a unit or lesson within the current Fall and Spring semesters. Students can recover unlimited units in multiple courses at the same time. Unit Recovery is available while taking a course at the student's home school. Classroom teachers assign students virtual units to complete during non-school hours. The previous failed unit grade will be replaced by the recovered unit grade for the course.

All students enrolled in Atlanta Public Schools can recover units and/or lessons for the current semester only. No individual units can be recovered before or after the current semester. If a student is taking Algebra I during this semester, this student can only recover units for Algebra I during this semester.

What Part-Time Means at AVA

AVA Part-Time courses are taken alongside a student’s regularly scheduled classes at their home school. Students remain connected to their school community, counselors, and school based supports, while completing an online course through AVA.

Part-Time courses offer a flexible structure that combines live instruction and independent work. Students follow a consistent daily schedule that includes live lessons and teacher interaction, and they also complete assignments independently during set time at school or after school hours. This model is especially helpful for students balancing academics with activities, work, health needs, or family responsibilities.

Students work with their home school counselor to enroll in AVA Part-Time courses. Students can participate in AVA Part-Time courses in two ways, depending on their schedule and needs.

Delivery Model

AVA Part-Time courses can be delivered in one of two formats. These options help schools and families choose the structure that best fits a student’s day.

1) During the Day

During the Day means time is built into the student’s schedule to work on AVA course(s) at school, during the school day.

This option is often a good fit when:

the student’s schedule includes a class period or designated time for AVA
the home school wants the student to have protected time during the day to complete course work
the student benefits from a structured environment to stay on pace and meet deadlines

2) Beyond the Day

Beyond the Day means the student takes an AVA course in addition to a full school day schedule and completes course work after school hours, during their own time.

This option is often a good fit when:

the student wants to add a course but does not have room in the school day schedule
the student is motivated and able to manage consistent independent work time after school
the course supports a specific goal such as acceleration, scheduling flexibility, or credit needs

What to Expect

A weekly routine

Students should plan to log in and engage every week, follow a pacing calendar, and meet assignment deadlines.

Live lessons and teacher support

Most courses include scheduled live instructional time and opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback, and get help when needed.

Independent work time

Students will complete readings, practice, assignments, and assessments independently. Time management is important, especially for Beyond the Day courses.

Progress monitoring

Teachers monitor participation and progress. Families and students should regularly check grades, feedback, and course announcements.

Communication

Students are expected to communicate with their AVA teacher when they need support. Families may also be asked to help reinforce routines and monitor progress.

Technology and access

Students need reliable access to a device and internet to participate consistently and complete online coursework.

Fall '26 Session Dates: Part Time

Registration: July 27th-August 28th
Fall Term Dates: August 3rd-December 11th
Date to complete 75% before enrolling in second course: October 2nd
Drop Date: October 23rd
IC and CR will be dropped after 20 days of enrollment if the student has not started the course.
Last day to enroll for IC courses: October 6

Enrollment Process

Review available course options.
Schedule a meeting with the home school counselor.
The counselor completes the enrollment in AVA Part-Time.
The student receives confirmation and onboarding information.
The student completes required onboarding and starts the course.
