Student FAQ

Students complete lesson activities, homework, class discussions, and tests 100% online. Content is mastered through pre-recorded videos and teachers are virtually available for support when needed. Students must log in daily Monday – Friday to complete coursework. This requires students have access to a working computer and an Internet connection.

AVA staff may conduct in person orientations/check-ins at the students home school. However, all AVA courses are 100% online.

Check that you have entered the correct URL to login to your course. Initial Credit and Credit Recovery students should login at atlanta.geniussis.com; Lesson/Unit Recovery students should login at atlanta.learn.edgenuity.com. If your login credentials do not work, speak with your school counselor.

Your enrolled course will indicate whether you are a During the Day (DTD) or Beyond the Day (BTD) student. 

During the Day (DTD) students can not drop their AVA course. Beyond the Day students may request to drop before the drop date listed on the application.

You should schedule your workload according to your course pacing guide. All course pacing guides require that you work daily Monday – Friday.

Yes. AVA will not discriminate against any qualified individual on the basis of disability. It is the responsibility of the home school to ensure that the system meets all requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504. The current Individualized Education Program or 504 Plan must be provided to Atlanta Virtual Academy by the home school. Atlanta Virtual Academy will follow all applicable provisions in the IEP or 504 Plan. However, there may be some provisions that cannot be implemented. In such a case, the home school must determine whether Atlanta Virtual Academy is an appropriate placement.

Students can take one AVA BTD course per semester.

Middle School students can take online courses each semester. Students must get approval from their school’s administration and counselor. Middle school students can also take courses for high school credits towards graduation. 8th graders may take Algebra I. Personal Fitness and Health are also available the summer prior to the start of their 9th grade year.

AVA Initial Credit courses meet NCAA requirements and are NCAA approved. AVA Credit Recovery courses do not meet NCAA requirements and are not approved for NCAA credits.

AVA teachers can be contacted by phone, email, text, or the Live Virtual Learning Center (LVLC). Students and parents can access their teachers contact information in Genius by logging into their course and clicking on the Teacher Information tab.

Atlanta Virtual Academy grades are reported through Genius and Infinite Campus. AVA Initial Credit and Credit Recovery final grades will be posted on the student’s transcript. AVA Unit Recovery final grades will be substituted in Infinite Campus for the replacing unit of study by their home school’s face-to-face teacher.

All online teachers are Georgia certified Teachers.

Online course opportunities are offered to PreK-12th grade students enrolled in the district.

School counselors must enroll students in AVA Initial Credit and Credit Recovery courses. The student's classroom teacher enrolls students for Unit Recovery.

The AVA program provides an initial school visit to APS high schools in addition to a virtual orientation provided through Edgenuity. These orientations will give you information about navigating Genius and your course(s) in Edgenuity.

During the day (DTD) students will be provided a device, internet, and working space during school hours. If you are taking AVA courses that are not within the school day or beyond the school day (BTD), you will need a laptop and internet to complete your course or units.

Students will use their APS issued Network ID and lunch number to login to their online course.

Yes. If a student does not drop the course by the designated drop period, the grade received will be posted to the student's transcript, calculated in GPA at the appropriate weight, and in class rank.

Neither. Online courses must meet or exceed the same state standards as traditional courses. All AVA courses are evaluated for rigor to ensure the standards are met. Distance learning courses require different study skills, which may make the course harder, or easier, depending on the learner.

Only Advanced Placement courses require a textbook. These textbooks will be distributed by the home school’s textbook coordinator.
